Rainwater harvesting does not replace responsible water conservation or a regulated mains supply. However, it can provide a valuable supplementary water source for homes, schools, communities and businesses.
Depending on the quality of the source water, the treatment process and local regulations, harvested rainwater may be used for irrigation, cleaning and toilet flushing. When it is properly collected, filtered and disinfected, it may also be treated to provide safer drinking water.

Disinfection is one part of a complete water-safety process. Water containing visible dirt, sediment or suspended particles should be filtered before treatment.
