Ships masters need to check availability on a port by post basis as regulations regarding sales of Aquatabs, Klorsept & Aquatabs granules vary and may be subject to restrictions.

Starting out
Ships tanks and water pipes are subject to the growth of bio-film arising from infected water. Once the bio-film takes hold it will infect further water introduced in to the tanks or pipes regardless of the quality of that water.

A bio-film is a matrix of bacteria attached to pipes that continues to grow and multiply. This Biofilm is resistant to chemicals.

For this reason tanks and pipes should ideally be cleaned out. After cleaning and where access is restricted this may be accomplished with either a strong Aquatabs / Klorsept shock dose (50ppm) or by allowing a 200:1 vinegar to water mix stand in the tanks and pipes  for a minimum of 4 hours but ideally for 24 hours.

The procedure to follow is to introduce the solution to the tanks and pipes and then in succession turn on all taps until the smell of the solution indicates the arrival of the shock-dose or vinegar mix at the tap point. The tap is then turned off and the mixture is allowed stand in the pipes.

Once the stand time is complete all taps should be again turned on to ensure good flush-through of microscopic biofilm globules which have become detached.


Potable water treatment
Aquatabs 1000 – 1 tablets per 1000 litres

Aquatabs Granules – each 2 Grams of Granules will disinfect 500 litres of water

Shock-treatment to remove bio-film
Aquatabs 1000 / Klorsept 87  – 1 tablet per 20 litres

Klorsept 2.5g = 1 tablet per 30 litres

Aquatabs Granules – 1 gram per 10 litres or 100grams per ton of water

To calculate the total amount of water that should be shock dosed in a ships piping system,1st – assume full tanks & ensure full during treatment2nd – Multiply the length of the pipes using one of the following,

  • 1 inch pipe  = 0.5 litre per meter
  • ¾ inch pipe =0.3 litre per meter
  • ½ inch pipe = 0.125 litre per meter

         (example for 1 inch pipe = 50 meters of pipes x .5 litre =25 litres)3rd – add 25% more for safety factor.4th Add results for  1 + 2 + 3 above

For long term storage of water, treat the water when it arrives on the vessel and again before use begins.

For short term storage of water treat on arrival in vessel and every month thereafter.

Chlorine Test strips
For accurate assessment of water safety on board use low-cost test strips.
Simply dip the strip in a flow of water from the furthest tap from the storage tanks. Compare the colour with the colours on the tub and this will indicate the chlorine concentration in the pipes.

The ideal concentration is 0.2 – 0.5 ppm (parts per million). Concentrations up to 5ppm will not cause health issues however the water will have a strong aroma of chlorine.
